Ironkid expects tough challenge

LAPU LAPU CITY, Cebu , Philippines   â€“ After dominating the first three editions of the Alaska Ironkids Philippines Triathlon, Tara Borlain braces for a tougher challenge this time when the event is fired off today at the posh Shangri-La Mactan Resorts and Spa grounds here.

“I’m challenged,” said Borlain, expecting a fierce duel with Tahlia McCormack, daughter of former two-time Ironman world champion Chris McCormack, and a host of others in the 9-10 age category.

Still, Borlain said she’s confident of her chances for a fourth straight victory although she was a bit intrigued on what she’ll be facing, particularly against McCormack.

“How old is she?” asked Borlain.

Meanwhile, McCormack’s younger sister, seven-year-old Sienna, is also participating in the 6-8 age division.

Joining Borlain and McCormack in the title hunt are Syrah Ruty Uy, who topped the 6-8 group last year, and Sofia Ildefonso, daughter of former PBA star Danny Ildefonso.

Borlain, whose father, Ringo, is a 2006 Mr. Universe winner and former San Miguel strength and conditioning coach, has vowed to give it her best shot in what could be her last stint here.

“I was supposed to have retired but I decided at the last minute to give it one last go here,” she said.

About 200 kids aged six to 14 years – the biggest in four years – will clash for this year’s title.

The one-day race will cover 100 meters of swimming, three kilometers of biking and one kilometer of running for the young ones and 300m swim, 10k bike and 2k run for the older participants, all tipped to vie in the Cobra Ironman 70.3 in the future.

“It’s more exciting this year because we have bigger participation, which means tougher competition,” said Alaska IronKids Phl race director Ani de Leon in yesterday’s media and participants’ briefing.
