MANILA, Philippines - The Fil-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association captured two of three divisional titles via sweep to highlight another dominating performance in the 22nd ASEAN Veterans Basketball Tournament at the ASABA Basketball Club in Jakarta last Sunday.
With Danny Ching scoring almost at will and Rudy Yu, Julio Cruz, Robert Sy, Ng Yuk Chi and Ben Ong providing big defensive help in the payoff period, the FCVBA clobbered Hatyai of Thailand, 66-42, to rule the 50-years-and-above division for the fifth straight year.
Ching topscored with 18 points while former Letran star Jerry Gonzales, Cruz and Chi all scored nine markers each for FCVBA, which completed a four-game sweep of its division.
The FCVBA, sponsored by Terry Que, Eduard Tio and Jimi Lim, also stamped its class in the 40-years-and-above category as it whipped the host club, 63-50, for its third straight championship.
Like their 50s counterparts, the 40s also won the title via sweep, winning all their five games, including three in the elims.
But the FCVBA failed to duplicate its three-title romp last year as its 60-years squad settled only for third this time.
The 40s were led by former PBA players Benny Cheng and Braulio Lim, who finished with 14 points apiece.
