MANILA, Philippines - The Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) kicks off its summer grand slam softball tournament on May 1 with over 27 teams seeing action in Clark Field, Pampanga.
Adamson, University of the Philippines, National University, Rizal Technological University and Polytechnic University of the Philippines head the cast in the seven-day event.
Others vying in the tournament are University of Sto. Tomas, Central Luzon State University, Bulacan State University, Davao, Rizal, Ateneo, University of the Cordilleras Baguio, Makati City, La Salle Zobel, Phil. Air Force, Cebu, Zamboanga, MS Marikina, Libjo Batangas, Baras Rizal, Ateneo Coach and Pasig.
Two foreign teams in Lakidende of Indonesia and Chikara of Brunei have also expressed interest in joining the competitions divided into Open and Club categories featuring the men’s and women’s classes.
Format is a single round-robin tournament with the Open winner to get P30,000 and the Club champion to receive P15,000.
“The summer grand slam provides a playing venue to players in and outside the Philippines to showcase and develop their softball skills. Mounting softball events like summer grand slam is one of Asaphil’s way to also promote softball in the Philippines. We really believe that softball is a sport for Filipinos,†said Asaphil president Jean Henri Lhuillier.
