MVPSF coaches confab draws 200 mentors

MANILA, Philippines - Some 200 high school coaches from the SeaOil National Basketball Training Center Elite League attended the second Manuel V. Pangilinan Sports Foundation (MVPSF) Coaches Convention at the Philsports Arena over the weekend.

Multi-titled PBA coach Tim Cone of B-Meg, former Powerade head coach Bo Perasol, Talk ‘n Text and Smart Gilas assistant coach Josh Reyes, National University coach Eric Altamirano, Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga, and Arellano University coach Koy Banal and strength and conditioning guru Hercules Callanta, nutrition specialist Luchie Callanta, and motivational speaker Ardy Abello graced the three-day convention held in cooperation with the National Basketball Training Center.

The meeting discussed and featured workshops on dribble drive offense, defending the pick and roll, the finer points of a full court press and the importance of values in the formation of a young basketball player.

The crux of the convention wasn’t solely on the latest basketball techniques but also in stressing the importance of values formation, adherence to studies, and strength of character.

“This is our way of giving back to the game and to help Filipinos everywhere by bringing some of the best basketball minds in the country today for a convention,” said training director Alex Compton. “High school coaches have a tremendous responsibility and privilege. They help develop the next generation of basketball superstars, but more importantly, they teach, discipline, and mold boys into young men. It is an honor for the entire NBTC staff to serve the frontliners of Philippine basketball who are raising up the next generation of leaders.”

The MVPSF Convention is one of the grassroots development projects of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
