Cebu hosts Palawan Pawnshop netfest today

MANILA, Philippines - Cebu City gets the chance to host the Philta-Palawan Pawnshop Regional Age-Group Championships presented by Babolat as it stages the ninth and 10th legs of the circuit beginning today at the Cebu International Tennis Center in Consolacion.

“We take pride in hosting not just one but two legs of the Philta-Palawan Pawnshop Regional Age-Group,” said Consolacion Mayor Teresa Alegado. “It has been our desire to help in the development and promotion of the sport and at the same time provide our youth a venue where they could hone their talent and skills.”

The city’s leading and rising junior players, and those from nearby towns and provinces, will slug it out for top honors in the 10-unisex and boys’ and girls’ 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-and-under categories.

Cebu is actually hosting two legs of the circuit sponsored by Palawan Pawnshop and Babolat and sanctioned by Philta with the other slated Sept. 29-Oct. 1. For details, call up tournament in-charge Bobby Mangunay at 0195-4046464 or email bobbymangunay@yahoo.com.

“It’s time for our young players from Cebu City to display their talent. We’re hoping to discover more athletes who can be trained for future international tournaments,” said Philta regional vice-president and Palawan Pawnshop chief operating officer Bobby Castro.

The winners in all categories will be tapped to represent the country in some International Tennis Federation tournaments in Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and South Korea with all expenses to be shouldered by Palawan Pawnshop.

The tournament serves as the regional tennis sports tournament program for children, and is envisioned to address the need for a grassroots tennis program centered on values formation inherent in the practice of tennis sports and play.

“We’re very thrilled to bring this tournament at the Cebu International Tennis Center in Cebu City and we’re inviting all tennis enthusiasts to take part in the event,” said Technosports president Gillermo Nocom.
