MANILA, Philippines - Freddie Webb, the former PBA superstar, senator and Olympian, will be the guest of honor on Sept. 10, in the Smart/PLDT 19th PBA Press Corps awards to be held at the Kamayan EDSA.
Webb, a member of the 1972 Philippine Team to the Munich Games, played pro ball for Tanduay and later on had stints as coach of the defunct Rhum Masters and Shell.
The highlight of the affair that starts at 7 p.m. is the awarding of the Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year trophies even as Mark Caguioa of Barangay Ginebra, and Larry Fonacier of Talk ‘N Text won the Comeback Player of the Year and Mr. Quality Minutes awards, respectively.
Caguioa was the hands-down choice for Comeback Player of the Year after returning from a career-threatening eye injury to lead the Gin Kings to a semifinal appearance in the Governors’ Cup before winning the season MVP.
Fonacier, meanwhile, has been the steadiest player to come off the Talk ‘N Text bench, and though he played the most minutes than any other Tropang Texter for the season, his valuable contributions made him the unanimous Mr. Quality Minutes choice.
The Scoring Champ award, which Gary David won, the All-Rookie Team citations and the Defensive Player of the Year trophy are the other awards that will be handed out.
Smart Gilas-Pilipinas, which won the Jones Cup two weeks ago and which departs for Tokyo, Japan for the Stankovic Cup next week, will be honored with a special award.
