MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Volcanoes, the national rugby team, did the country proud once again with its historic win in the recently-concluded HSBC Asian 5 Nations Tournament held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
“We are proud of the team’s win, especially since it had put the Philippines in the rugby map. It is an indication that we have bolstered our country’s standings in the international rugby community,” sid Rick Santos, CB Richard Ellis chairman and secretary general of Philipine Rugby Football Union.
“Their success not only helps promote awareness of the sport in the country, it will also help us in our thrust of developing rugby as the preferred sport among the youth, starting at the grassroots level,” he added.
The Volcanoes advanced to the top 5 of the elite division which will have traditional powerhouses Japan, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Korea seeing action in the A5 Nations tournament next year.
