Taconing defends WBC Int'l title vs Thai tonite

MANILA, Philippines - World International lightflyweight champion Jonathan Taconing of the Elorde stable defends his crown tonight against top contender and Thai champion Ngaoprachan Chuwatana at the Ibalong Recreation Center in Legaspi City.

The city government of Legaspi headed by Mayor Geraldine Rosal and city administrator and former Mayor Noel Rosal are staging this big fight in coordination with international promoter Johnny Elorde.

The Rotary Club of Manila 101 headed by Liza Elorde and sister club RC Legaspi West under Al Barriso are also giving their full support to the promotion which will help the youth shy away from illegal drugs.

Taconing, currently No. 11 in the world rankings, promised to finish the bout in the early rounds and score a convincing win to gain a crack at the world championship. However, Chuwatana said he would go all out to snatch the title from Taconing.

Noel Rosal said he is interested to host big boxing bouts in the city’s 8,000 capacity state-of-the-art air-conditioned Ibalong Recreation Center and told Elorde that he wants to have a world championship fight staged in the city next year.

In the supporting main event, former Philippine champion Vinvin Rufino will fight Richard Laano in 10 rounds while undefeated Glenn Sumingit will be pitted against Rodel Quilaton also in 10-round bout.
