MANILA, Philippines - Filipino Davis Cuppers Treat Conrad Huey and Jeson Patrombon dropped their respective assignments to bomb out of the US Open the other day in New York.
Fil-Am Huey and Indian partner Somdev Devvarman saw their bid for a quarterfinal berth dashed by fourth seeded Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi who hacked out a 6-4, 7-5 triumph in their second-round encounter.
The more experienced Paes and Bhupathi won 34 of their 40 attempts on first serve for 85 percent, as against Huey and Devvarman’s 34 of 43 (79 percent) and pounded on duo’s 12 unforced errors to prevail in the 92-minute encounter.
Despite the ouster, Huey enjoyed his best showing in a Grand Slam event in Flushing Meadows.
Huey’s Davis Cup teammate Jeson Patrombon also stumbled over in the boys’ side of the competitions.
Patrombon and Kiwi partner Jaden Grinter bowed to Russians Aslan Karatzek and Evgeny Karlovsky, 4-6, 6-0, 6-10, in first-round action, ending his junior stint on a sour note. Patrombon earlier yielded a 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 setback to Portugal’s Frederico Ferreira Silva in the opener of boys’ singles.
From New York, Patrombon and Huey will fly home to Phl to hook up with playing captain Cecil Mamiit, Reuben Gonzales and Johnny Arcilla for the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Zone Group 1 relegation playoff. They will try to keep Phl’s Group I slot against Chinese Taipei on Sept. 16-18 in Lapu Lapu City.
