Letran went on a shooting spree in the fourth quarter to rout St. Benilde, 112-91, and wheel back into solo third place behind San Sebastian and San Beda in the 87th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Kevin Alas fired 19 points he spiked with six assists, five rebounds and a steal while team captain Jam Cortes likewise poured in 19 points and hauled down 13 rebounds as they powered the Knights to their third win that more than made up for their 62-71 setback to the San Sebastian Stags last week.
The Muralla-based school also became the first team to score at least 110 points since St. Benilde turned back Arellano U, 117-107, in triple overtime on July 31, 2009.
Letran coach Louie Alas, however, expressed reservations on the team’s victory.
“It’s probably our first game that we won by outscoring our opponent instead not letting them score that much,” said Alas. “I don’t know if I’ll be happy or not because of this but I guess I should be happy because we won.” – Joey Villar
