MANILA, Philippines – Jobim Carlos battled back from nine strokes down to beat Malaysian Gavin Green and capture the Sabah International Amateur golf crown with a closing five-under 67 at the Tawau Golf Club in Sabah, Malaysia Sunday.
Carlos, 18, thus became the only player to break par over the tough layout to tally a 54-hole 225 and post a five-stroke romp over Green.
The victory firmed up Carlos status as one of the country’s leading amateurs as he continued to dish out fine form after undergoing training with Chris Walkey at the PGA West Stadium course in La Quinta, California.
Other members of the national pool are also set to attend the Walkey’s camp, according Tommy Manotoc, the National Golf Association of the Philippines chair for national team development.
Green, who held the lead for the first two rounds after efforts of 75 and 74, ballooned to an 81, the same score that Carlos had in the second round. Green finished with a 231 tally to nip countryman Low Kai Jei by a shot for second.
