MANILA, Philippines - Grandmaster Eugene Torre defeated Fide Master Hamdani Rudin in the third round then settled for a draw with IM Liu Dede in the fourth to drop to joint fourth in the TELIN International chess tournament 2011 at the Graha Citra Caraka PT Telkom in Jakarta, Indonesia yesterday.
Torre, 56, earlier shared the lead after sweeping his first two games but failed to sustain his charge in the fourth and slid to fourth with 3.5 points with five rounds left in the Swiss system tournament which lured 110 players from across the region.
The other 3.5 pointers were GM Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam, GM Susanto Megaranto, IM Liu Dede, IM Sadikin Irwanto and WFM Medina Warda Aulia of Indonesia.
Torre plays Aulia in the fifth round.
On top with four points were GM Zhang Zhong of Singapore, GM Cerdas Barus and IM Taufik Halay of Indonesia.
