MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University turned back Ateneo, 25-19, 25-12, 25-20, to rule the inaugural Eagle Ridge Men’s Volleyball Invitational tournament at the Family Clubhouse gymnasium of the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite recently.
With spikers Nestor Molate and Jhay-R Labrador and setter Pitrus de Ocampo leading the attack, the Tamaraws swept Group A of the eliminations then set up the finals duel with Ateneo by beating University of Perpetual Help System-Laguna in straight sets in the stepladder semifinals, 25-18, 25-19.
Ateneo, behind Duane Teves and Narciso Intal, bounced back from an opening set loss to repulse Philippine Merchant Marine School 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, and earn a crack at the title. UPHS-Laguna defeated PMMS for third place in the tournament sponsored by East Asia Property Development Corp., LG Electronics, Gatorade, PhilGreen, Oum’s Golf Academy, Ancilla Domini Graphics, Srixon, PacSports and DMD Cool Care.
The tourney kicked off a series of summer activities at Eagle Ridge which boasts of modern facilities for basketball, tennis, bowling, table tennis, billiards and swimming aside from its four championship golf courses.
FEU finished on top of Group A by sweeping its matches over Ateneo and St. Dominic Savio College while UPHS, PMMS and La Salle Dasmariñas figured in a three-way tie with similar 1-1 win-loss records in Group B which was broken via a tiebreak.
Far Eastern won a cash prize of P20,000 plus a trophy and medals while the Ateneo squad took home P10,000 plus a trophy and medals. UPHS-Laguna settled for P5,000 plus a trophy and medals.
Meanwhile, in the members monthly golf tournament for March, Tong Wha-lee, Young Taek-jung, Gene Tonolte, Nelson Ireland, Young Hwan-An, Rudy Villanueva, Eden Hernandez, Soon In-park, Carlos Tinio III, Da Jeong-kim, Erane Cayetano and Cathy Neish took the top awards in their respective divisions.
