MANILA, Philippines - Top seeed Jeson Patrombon survived unheralded Paul Monteban of the Netherlands, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the Chang ITF Junior Tennis Championships in Nonthaburi, Thailand yesterday.
Patrombon, playing his last year in the junior ranks, will meet No. 10 Teodor Nicolae Marin of Romania, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over unseeded Jordan Thompson of Australia, in the Last 8.
The Iligan City bet is out to win the tournament coming off a long break as he tries to improve on his World Junior ranking at No. 9.
Although Patrombon, who reached the quarters of the recently Australian Juniors Open, is turning 18 this month, he is still eligible to play and campaign on the Tour until the end of the year.
Patrombon, who drew a first round bye, dominated Morgan Johannson of Sweden, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round.
In doubles event, Patrombon and Jaden Grinter of New Zealand cruised to the semis with a 6-1, 6-4 rout of Gao Xin of China and Wang Chieh-Fu of Chinese Taipei.
The fourth-seeded Patrombon-Grinter pair will next face second pick Pedja Krstn of Serbia and Maxim Lunkin of Russia, who downed the French duo of Gregoire Barrere and Enzo Couacaud, 6-2, 2-6, 10-4.
