Laurente, Sultan duel for welter title

MANILA, Philippines –  Former Orient and Pan Asian champion Dennis Laurente slugs it out with former World Boxing Federation and Phl champion Dondon Sultan for the vacant Philippine welterweight crown tonight at the Metro Naga Coliseum in Naga.

Presented by the city government of Naga headed by Mayor John Bongat and put up by international promoter Johnny Elorde, the event, dubbed “Boxing Kontra Droga,” also features eight fights in the undercard.

Juan Mguel Elorde, grandson of the great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde who is undefeated in his eight pro fights, will be pitted against Richard Vasquez of Libon, Albay in one of the undercards.

Laurente, who beat Rashad Holloway at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Margarito fight last year, hopes to get past his rival nicknamed El Supremo as he eyes a shot at a world crown this year under Top Rank and MP Promotions, according to Laurente’s manager, Johnny Elorde.
