John Hay pads Am Championship lead

BAGUIO, Philippines – Camp John Hay slowed down a bit with a 110 but remained on top in the Fil Championship division, leading Manila Southwoods by 18 points in the Fil-Am seniors golf tournament at the Baguio Country Club here yesterday.

Goody Ignacio fired 30 points while Jong Won Park and Fred Puckett added 28 and 27, respectively, for the team’s 110 output and a 54-hole aggregate of 358.

Southwoods pooled a 340 after a 112 from Eduardo Sison’s 30, Alfredo Mendoza’s 29, Florene Delos Santos’ 28 and Antonio Hernandez’ 25.

ABW Leaves of Life remained in third with a 285 after an 80 from Albert Garcia’s 24 points, Eriberto Bunye’s 23, Ben Jacinto’s 17 and Bo Tuason’s 16 points.

Over at the Camp John Hay Golf Club, DOTC Maritime chief Federico Mandapat turned in 39 points, equivalent to three-under par in stroke play, as CJH shot a 124 to erect a whopping 70-point lead over Manila Southwoods in the Am Championship.

Mars Garcia backed Mandapat’s superb round with 30 points while Lee Ki Sung and Nelson Eslao added 28 and 27, respectively for CJH, which pooled a three-day total of 331 heading to the last 18 holes of the tournament backed by American Eye Center, Rudy Project, Wilson Sports, Gatorade, Carts Plaza and Supreme Bikes.

“I would not say that it’s insurmountable but I like our chances of winning right now,” said CJH Golf Club manager Steve McDonald.

Southwoods scored 98 points from Bryan Park’s 28, Edgardo Cataquis and Mentz Deguito’s pair of 25s and Ariel Abonal’s 20 for a 54-hole haul of 261.

In Fil E action, Savers Comclark scored an 88 for a 289 as it wrested a one-point lead over Waterlympics Clark, which had a 288 after an 84.

Senen Quiambao fired 28 points while Rene Mangio 23, Simon Mangio 20 and the 17 of Noel Yamzon added 23, 20 and 17 points, respectively, for Savers Comclark in the tournament supported by Dusit Thani Manila, New World Renaissance Hotel, Island Cove, Uniliver, Ritzgolf Sports Marketing and Willow Tree.

Waterlympics drew 23 points from Crisostomo Garbo while Nestor Macaraniag, Eric De Leon and Alex Dandan’s 19 added 22, 20 and 19 points, respectively.

Stallion scored 82 points and stayed in contention with a 280. Scorers for the team were Marc Cruz (27), Elvin Dinio and Mark Lapid, who both had 19 points and Andy Austria (17).

In Am E, 671 Guam Golf posted a 23-point bulge over Benguet Laboratories with a 246 after an 88 as Cesar Quinto shot a 29, Jerome Susim and Ely Arreola added 22 points each and Pat Gomez chipped in 15 points.

Benguet Laboratories had a 223 after a 77 from Bong Bangaoet’s 23, Gene Estandian’s 22, Bob Capuyan’s 18 and Tony Buenavista’s 14 points.
