MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines’ Jeson Patrombon teamed up with Uzbekistan’s Sergey Shipilov as they walloped Japan’s Motoaki Kita and Iori Uehara, 6-2, 6-3, Tuesday at the start of the men’s doubles competitions in the World Junior Tennis Championships’ Mayor’s Cup in Osaka, Japan yesterday.
The fourth-seeded Patrombon and Shipilov overpowered the hosts with their served-and-volley game as they cruised to the victory for a second round encounter with Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and Jordan Thomson.
Kyrgios and Thomson bucked a first set scare and subdued Switzerland’s Dimitri Bretting and Jensing Hausaer, 7-6 (6), 6-2, in their own side of the duel.
Patrombon, 17, actually faced and defeated Thomson in a tournament in Vietnam early this year although the two players were paired with different partners then.
The Filipino was with Korea’s Na Jung Woong while the Australian teamed up with compatriot Jay Andrijic with Patrombon and Na pulling off the win in straight sets.
This time, however, Thomson will be pairing with the veteran Kyrgios, who has already won three doubles titles with a different partner.
Meanwhile, Patrombon is currently playing German Constantin Christ in the second round of the singles competition.
Also ranked No. 4, Patrombon rallied from a first set loss and hacked out a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Japanese Yutaro Matsuzaki the other day.
