Paeng, Liza open Bowling World Cup final bids

MANILA, Philippines - The country’s finest bowlers, led by six-time world champion Paeng Nepomuceno and veteran internationalist Liza del Rosario, make their respective bids for a trip to France with the start of the Bowling World Cup national finals on Monday and Tuesday at Coronado Lanes (formerly Starmall).

Nepomuceno and 81 others, including ex-world titlist Biboy Rivera, Paulo Valdez, Benshir Layoso, Raoul Miranda and Chester King, roll 12 games at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Then Del Rosario and 56 other keglerettes including Krizziah Tabora and Apple Posadas compete in 10 games also at 10 a.m. the following day in the same venue.

The top 34 ladies and men will advance to the second day of competition and with their scores carried over, the ladies will roll another 10 games and the men another 12 games to determine the 16 – eight men and eight ladies – who will remain in the hunt for berths in the international finals set Oct. 15-24 at the 44-lane Bowling de Provence in Toulon, France.

The 82 men and 57 ladies made it to the national finals by topping the two qualifying periods and center finals conducted in 14 different venues.

The national men’s and ladies champions will carry the Philippine colors in the French competition. Other prizes are P30,000 and P25,000 gift checks plus trophies for the runners-up, P20,000 and P10,000 plus trophies for the third-placers and P10,000 and P7,500 for the fourth finishers.
