Beermen promise tough stand in title showdown

MANILA, Philippines - The San Miguel Beermen on Tuesday night vowed to work hard for another championship even as they thanked the sports scribes for their coverage during the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Conference.

Taking a break from following their entry into finals, the Beermen led by Danny Seigle briefly graced the second San Miguel Beer National Beer Drinking Contest media edition at The Cruise Restaurant at the San Miguel By The Bay at the SM Mall of Asia Tuesday night.

“We’re happy as this is one of the few times that we get to bond with the media. We thank them for wishing us luck and we will definitely work very hard to win a PBA title again,” said Seigle, whose team is the defending champion of the current tournament.

The Beermen start their finals quest in the best-of-seven that begins this Friday.  

With Seigle were Denok Miranda, Mick Pennisi, Mike Holper, Chris Calaguio and Lordy Tugade along with coaching staff members Gee Abanilla and Freddie Abunda with team manager Hector Calma, who acted as one of the judges along with Peter Martin and four-time PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Alvin Patrimonio during the event.

Winning the championship was the team composed of Abac Cordero of The Philippine Star, Teddyvic Melendres of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Tina Maralit of Manila Bulletin, Nick Giongco of the Manila Bulletin and Malaya’s Noli Cortez. They clocked one minute and 20 seconds.

Bagging second place was the group of Manila Bulletin’s Waylon Galvez, Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Roy Luarca and Francis Ochoa, Gerry Ramos of the People’s Journal and Malaya’s Jerome Lagunzad, who combined for a time of one minute and 28 seconds.

Taking third place was the team of Snow Badua and Ricky Yap Santos of Sports Radio, Zaldy Perez of Abante, Jimmy Mendoza of Sunshine Radio and Danny Simon of Remate Tonight. They timed one minute and 37 seconds.
