MANILA, Philippines - The FDG/Partners Cup Invitational Badminton tournament unfolds today with over 200 players vying for top honors in various divisions and over P400,000 in prizes at stake at the Yonex Badminton courts in Mandaluyong City.
The Partners Cup features competitions in the Class Elite and Classes A, B, C, D and E among the management and staff of the sponsoring Robinsons Land Corp.’s (RLC) and its business partners, including architects, consultants, project managers, contractors and suppliers and friends.
More than 100 raffle prizes will also be up for grabs during the awards rites to be graced by movie/TV celebrities, headed by Valerie Concepcion.
A trip for two to Hong Kong, plus accommodation, laptop computers and home appliances are among the prizes to be given away in the seventh staging of the annual event.
Local players and fans will also be treated to world-class badminton as Taiwanese Cheng Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chin showcase their talent and skills in the FDG Cup, the highlight of the one-day tournament held in honor of Frederick Go, president of Robinsons Land.
The talented doubles pair, currently ranked No. 8 in the world, will play against a slew of local talents, including veteran internationalist Kennevic Asuncion and Go, in a series of exhibition matches.
Cheng and Chien, who topped last year’s Yonex Korea Badminton Super Series, are coming off a series of semifinal finishes in the Badminton Asia Championships, the Swiss Super Series and the German Open. They also ruled Asia Zone prelims of the recent Thomas & Uber Cup.
Also seeing action in the event are some of the country’s top players as well as leading varsity players from various colleges and universities who will be going up against RLC’s top shuttlers.
