ASTANA, Kazakhstan – The Philippines’ Alice Kate Aparri of Baguio scored an impressive 9-1 decision over South Korea’s So Ming-Kyung Wednesday and earned at least a bronze medal in the Asian women’s boxing championship here.
Aparri raced to 3-0 lead in the first round and stepped up her attack in the second canto as she dominated her Korean rival for a 7-1 score.
“Even when I’m not in training, I hit the gym and lift weights. It helps me develop my power. And I needed it today to avenge the losses of Josie (Gabuco) and Nesthy (Petecio),” said Aparri, a Laos SEA Games gold medallist.
With the win, Aparri is assured of a bronze medal here and will face Boranbaeva of Kazakhstan in the semifinals Saturday.
The Philippine participation in the tournament is also supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee and Clusivol.
