Tams out to wrest quarterfinal slot

MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern U tries to formalize its stint in the quarterfinal round of the Filoil Flying V First Five Pre-Season Invitational Cup as it takes on also-ran Mapua at the Flying V Arena in San Juan today.

With a 4-2 card, the Tamaraws need to hurdle the Cardinals in their 3 p.m. clash in Group B to join the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers (6-1) in the next round.

But the Cardinals, with a 2-4 slate, are out to spoil the Tams’ bid and cap their campaign on a winning note. The Cards beat the St. Benilde Blazers, 79-71, last Saturday.

In other games, the National U Bulldogs and the Blazers collide at 1 p.m. while the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta side mix it up at 5 p.m.

The tournament is presented by Mighty Bond Extreme, with major sponsors Total Phils. Corp., San Marino Corned Tuna, Accel, Filoil Gas Company, Flying V and Hanesbrands, the official outfitter.

Tickets for today’s games are available thru TicketNet at 911-5555.

Against the Cards, FEU coach Glenn Capacio will again rely on center Reil Cervantes, who hit a trey to lift the Tams to a 62-61 thriller over the Bulldogs last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ateneo and San Beda go for a sweep of the elims as they take on separate rivals at resumption of the Filoil Flying V Accel Badolato Juniors Cup.

Ateneo battles EAC at 9 a.m., looking for its fifth straight victory in Group A while San Beda tries to match streak as it squares off with Mapua at 11 a.m. in Group B.        – With report from Kristina Villanueva
