MANILA, Philippines - Grandmasters Eugene Torre and Jayson Gonzales have spearheaded the establishment of the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) in an effort to give budding players a venue where they can further hone their skills.
PACE will be formally inaugurated on Saturday at Mindanao Ave. Road 1 in Project 6, Quezon City, coinciding with the induction of officers of the Philippine Chess Knights League.
Torre, Asia’s first ever Grandmaster, and Gonzales were guests in Tuesday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s in UN Avenue.
“This is a good venue especially to young chess players who want to improve their skills,” said Gonzales in the session presented by Outlast Battery, Pagcor, Accel and Shakey’s.
Aside from regular chess classes, Gonzales added PACE will also be holding tournaments for both titled and untitled players.
A summer rapid chess festival is also scheduled next month where tournaments involving masters, kiddies and ladies are set to be played.
