MANILA, Philippines - With Asi Taulava providing the leadership and inspiration, Coca-Cola has racked up two key wins to assure itself of a stint in the wildcard phase of the KFC PBA Philippine Cup.
Taulava continued to dish out fine form as he turned in averages of 20.5 points, 14.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists in powering the Tigers to victories over San Miguel Beer and Rain or Shine.
That netted the 2003 MVP the KFC/Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week honors for the period Jan. 11 to 17, his second after emerging the top player during the Dec. 14-20 week.
But Taulava refused to take sole credit for those victories, saying it was a total team effort.
“I appreciate the recognition, but I have to give the credit to coach Bo (Perasol) and the team for bringing the best out of me. Also, to boss JB (team manager JB Bayron) for always being there for the team and his all-out support,” said the 6-foot-9 Fil-Tongan.
“He had been a steady presence for us on both ends of the floor. He inspires intensity and enthusiasm in practice and during the game,” said Perasol.
With those victories, Coke improved its win-loss slate to 5-12.
