MANILA, Philippines - Subic Bay Yacht Club-based sailing team Selma Star/C! Calibre Magazine completed a three-peat as it ruled the sixth Borneo International Yachting Challenge in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia recently.
Bucking unpredictable conditions and a three-hour time handicap as two-time defending champion, Selma Star/C! Calibre Magazine topped the IRC Class in the 120-mile Miri-to-Labuan passage, placed second in the Labuan-to-Kota Kinabalu race, then finished first again in the three in-shore races in the Kota Kinabalu Bay in Sabah.
The team thwarted the challenge of Sarawak-based sailboats Miri Magic and Ulumulu to capture the overall honors in the annual event for the third straight time.
Jun Avecilla skippered Selma Star/C! Calibre Magazine with co-captain and SBYC commodore Ricky Sandoval. Other members of the team were Nestor Soriano, veteran Australian navigator Simon Victor, and Zedrik and Marcus Avecilla of The Subic Lighthouse Marina Resort.
The five-day sailing event was organized by the Sarawak Ministry of Urban Development and Tourism, Labuan Corporation, and Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment.
Meanwhile, Selma Star/C! Calibre Magazine will see action in the Raja Muda Cup in November in Selangor, Malaysia where they will be pitted anew against the world’s best sailors.
