Tigresses, Tams dispute Shakey's V-League lead

MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern U clash today in an early duel for the lead in the Shakey’s V-League Season 6 with two other teams debuting in the second conference of the tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Tigresses drew inspiration from the comebacking Angeli Tabaquero and Roxy Pimentel and mainstay Aiza Maizo to hold off the Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-18, 17-25, 25-17, 25-16, Sunday to kick off their bid for a sweep of the season’s crowns.

The Tams, on the other hand, subdued University of the Phils., 25-13, 25-23, 25-16, to likewise gain some momentum going into their 6 p.m. encounter with the fancied Tigresses in the second playdate of the single round elims of the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

Ateneo, one of the teams tipped to contend for the conference’s title with a solid roster, struts its wares against UP at 4 p.m. after the 2 p.m. clash between Adamson and Lyceum.

Meanwhile, games can be viewed live on webcast at www.v-league.ph and on a delayed basis on NBN-4.

Tabaquero, who skipped the last three conferences, came away with 15 points while Pimentel, seeing action for the first time after a three-year absence from big-time volley tournaments, added four points and the poise the Tigresses needed to thwart the Lady Falcons.

But the Lady Tams are raring to face the Tigresses, their confidence boosted by their straight-set romp over the Lady Maroons. Rachel Daquis, Shaira Gonzalez and Cherry Vivas scored 12 hits each and are expected to lead FEU’s upset bid against the España-based squad.
