Lady Pirates, 2 others show way in WNCAA

MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Lyceum, College of St. Benilde and University of Asia and the Pacific notched their second straight wins to share the early lead in the 40th WNCAA basketball tournament at the St. Scholastica’s College gym over the weekend.

Djessa Reyes sizzled with 34 points while Jona Yasay added 12 points as the Lady Pirates blasted the Centro Escolar University Scorpions, 80-42.

The UA&P Dragons, with Aurora Biolena coming away with 16 points, also scored a 62-33 rout over the Miriam College Katipuneras while the CSB Blazers leaned on a fourth quarter breakaway to subdue the St. Scholastica side, 71-57.

Jennifer Mayol topscored with 22 points while Jacqueline Zuniga and Mary Grace Dadal chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively, for St. Benilde.

Pearl Mallada fired 14 points while twins Kaye and Kate Del Rosario added 14 points apiece for the SSC Scions.

La Consolacion College Manila, meanwhile, evened its Senior B mark at 1-1 after downing San Beda College Alabang, 50-37. Katrine Catalan paced the LCCM Blue Royals with 16 points while Hazel Mangabat added 11 points.

Rookie team St. Jude Catholic School also hurdled its opening day game in the juniors side, beating La Salle College, 51-40, behind Nicole Dy’ 22 points.
