MANILA, Philippines - Close to 1,000 players saw action in yesterday’s opening of the 11th annual University of the Philippines’ Donic Star Chancellors Cup table tennis championships.
The five-day event, sanctioned by the UP College of Human Kinetics (UP CHK), offers berths in the national junior pool by the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines-Luzon chapter. The team willl compete in the upcoming Asian Youth Games in Singapore in June and World Youth Olympics next year.
The tournament is being held in conjunction with UP’s centennial celebration and the 40th anniversary of Diliman Preparatory School.
“The UP Chancellors Cup even brought ‘ping pong’ agility back to life once more,” said former Sen. Nikki Coseteng, president of Diliman Preparatory School who co-hosted the event.
Other members of the organizing committee are coach Oskie Santelices, UP CHK dean Hercules Callanta, Viva artist Ria Garcia, Chona Felicisimo and Marvin Uy.
Former TATAP national player and seven-time national champion Muse Balabat marked her debut by sweeping Ateneo, 3-0.
