Cebuano Tonyo Carcel and Joey Orduna of Ready2Race pulled separate sweeps to clinch the titles in their respective divisions recently in the championship round of the 2008 Shell Helix Karting Super Series at the Carmona Circuit Philippines.
It was the first major career plum for Carcel who unleashed the best he had to capture the Mini-ROK crown of this event sponsored by Shell Helix, Denso Iridium Power, PagCor Sports, Yokohama Tires, Motorstar Eastway Company and Aeromed Ambulance Transport.
He was prolific throughout as he dominated most of the race to turn back fellow Cebuano Jette Calderon and Christian Gaddi and claim the overall crown with 529 points.
Carcel hit the fastest laptime of 57.873 to wrap up the 15-lap final race in 14: 25.426, or a far 4.877 seconds ahead of Calderon.
The 12-year-old Orduna upstaged Expert drivers in the first two races before emerging as the ROK Junior Novice Karter of the Year.
He clocked 18:36.436 in the 20-lap race to prevail over Renz Pazcoguin of Jet Racing and Ready2Race teammate Jennifer Tumambing.
He bagged the ROK Junior Novice plum with 494 points, two points in front of Pazcoguin.
While Christian Gaddi is assured of his second Cadet Karter of the Year award, he was upstaged by rookie karter Jaz Monzones who also uncorked a sweep in the Cadet 60 division.
