AdU Lady Falcons stun Tigresses in V-League

Adamson snapped out of a three-game skid and upended fancied University of Santo Tomas in four sets yesterday to revive its semifinal bid in the Shakey’s V-League women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Losing a couple of five-setters to Far Eastern U and La Salle and dropping a tough four-set setback to streaking Lyceum, the Lady Falcons finally played to their full potential and stunned the inaugural champions with a come-from-behind 20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-22 victory.

Guest player Suzanne Roces came off the bench to lead Adamson’s attack from the second set, finishing with 27 hits for a 29-point output while Angela Benting backed her up with a solid offensive game of 13 kills.

Rissa Jane Laguilles took care of the team’s defense with four blocks and wound up with 11 points while Hannah Suarez scored on digs en route to a 13-point performance in the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision.

Although it hardly moved them from the lower half of the eight-team field, Adamson caught idle FEU in sixth with a 1-3 card while dealing UST its second loss against a lone victory.

Ateneo continued to flash fine form as it defeated four-peat seeking La Salle, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-15, to gain a share of second with San Sebastian at 3-1, behind Lyceum’s pacesetting 5-0 mark.

The Lady Archers, winners of the last three conference of the league, backed by Mikasa, Accel and Jaemark’s Restaurant and aired over NBN-4 across the week from 2-4 p.m., dropped to 2-3.

Letran likewise came out of the rut, ending a three-game losing skein with a 19-25, 25-23, 28-26, 25-12 victory over FEU in the second game.

Diana Diaz and guest player Mayette Carolino combined for 25 hits as the Letran tossers dominated the fourth set after scrambling for victories in sets two and three.

The Lady Tams, led by Rachelle Daquis’ 22 hits, slid to 1-4.

The Tigresses, winner of the inaugural staging of this event in 2004,  drew 15 hits from the power-hitting Venus Bernal and 13 points each from Ma. Angeli Tabaquero and Mary Jean Balse but failed to sustain their fine start.

Games are also replayed over the sports and entertainment cable channel Viva Prime 8:30-10:30 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
