Roach says Barrera rematch can wait

LAS VEGAS — Whatever happens Saturday, whether or not Manny Pacquiao beats Erik Morales, the Filipino slugger should take a little more time to rest before preparing for his next fight.

That’s according to Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach.

A few weeks back, the World Boxing Council ordered Marco Antonio Barrera, the reigning 130-pound champion, to face the winner of the coming fight early next year.

But even before the WBC announcement came, Barrera seemed to have made up his mind that he wants Pacquiao next. In fact, he has already set a date, which is March 11.

Barrera lost to Pacquiao in November of 2003, being knocked out in the 11th round of their scheduled 12-rounder. But the Mexican assassin picked up the pieces and went on to win the crown.

Barrera and Pacquiao are both under Oscar dela Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, meaning it wouldn’t be that hard to set up a big rematch between the two famous fighters.

Roach, however, believes that March 11 could be too early for Pacquiao’s next fight, and that it’s too close to a big fight like this one against Morales.

"That will be a good fight because Barrera has the belt. But probably in April," said the American trainer, who’s considering the fact that the Christmas holidays are just around the corner.

Pacquiao celebrates his 27th birthday on Dec. 17, and is expected to hold a big party, or a series of parties, in Manila and in his hometown in Gen. Santos City in southern Philippines.

Aside from his birthday, Pacquiao is also planning to have his new mansion blessed in Gen. Santos City, and his new baby baptized before Christmas. — Abac Cordero
