Torre, who settled for bronze in the individual rapid chess, halved the point with Singapore GM Wu Shaobin in the third round then whipped FM Weiming Goh, also of Singapore, in 47 moves in the fourth to share the lead with fellow GM Nguyen Ngoc Truongson with 3.5 points.
"I already had an advantage in my opening (Larsens) but I overlooked some of his (Gohs) counter-plays that caught me off guard for a while," said Torre, who had to exploit his stronger Queens side and his active bishop against Gohs knight to pull off the win.
Torre and Truongson, winner of the gold medal in rapid, were clashing for the solo lead at presstime.
