Tanamor powders Belarus fighter

KAUNAS, Lithuania — Harry Tanamor continued to fight well in the flyweight division as the Busan Asian Games silver medalist breezed past Zmaicik Segej of Belarus Saturday and reached the finals of the seventh A. Socikas International Boxing Tournament here.

Arlan Lerio, another veteran internationalist who’s on a comeback trail, also made it to the finals as he scored a 16-8 win over Slovenia’s Roman Durina to make up for the losses of featherweight Jenebert Basadre and lightweight Esmael Bacongon in the semifinals.

Basadre lost to Lithuania’s Marius Narkevicius, 12-6, while Bacongon bowed to Latvia’s Andrej Achmedov, 15-8.

Tanamor, who came so close to the Busan gold until he met a South Korean in the finals, is fighting as a flyweight here but will return as a lightfly when the Filipinos see action in two more tournaments in Greece and Spain in the next couple of weeks.

Tanamor will go up against Ivan Stapovic of Lithuania in the finals while Lerio, back after a layoff of more than a year, is ready to face Chacigov Chavazi of Bulgaria for the gold. Tanamor’s next opponent is the same boxer who defeated Violito Payla last year for the gold.

Russia and Ukraine sent five boxers each to the finals followed by Poland and Lithuania with three each. The four-day, 14-nation tournament is sanctioned by the Amateur International Boxing Association.
