Sailors hope action to pick up in Boracay tiff

Action in the 15th Boracay International Funboard Cup, the fourth event on the Adecco Asian Windsurfing Tour, presented by Foster’s, will hopefully pick up today after the events were stymied with only light breeze blowing across the bay on the Bulabog Beach.

That gave competitors a chance to take a look around the island, play some golf and do some scuba diving at "Coral Gardens," a popular off shore reef.

There are 66 competitors from 13 countries seeing action in the weekend event which by the Asian Windsurfing Tour’s standard is a good turnout. One of the fancied entries is local champion Nenette Graf who has competed in all but one of the 15 Boracay events.

"I have only missed one out of the 15 Boracay events and that was to have my baby! Out of these I have been ladies champion seven times," she said.

One of the featured events today will be the Foster’s Forward Loop contest where competitors head out onto the reef break to perform tricks — in particular the Forward Loop where the sailors jump their equipment high into the air and rotate it a full 360 degrees before landing and continuing on over the waves.

The Adecco Asian Windsurfing Tour, presented by Foster’s, is filmed for international television broadcast. The series of half hour shows is broadcast in over 100 countries worldwide. The first broadcast worldwide will be on Star Sports in April.

The Boracay International Funboard Cup is supported by the Philippine Department of Tourism, Green Yard Funboard Centre, Philippine Airlines, PhilStar.com, Maui & Sons and Asian Spirit. The Adecco Asian Windsurfing Tour is presented by Foster’s and supported by Neil Pryde, Lava Eyewear and Action Asia Magazine.
