The 24-year old Que, playing his final tournament as an amateur, amassed a two-day total of two-under par 142 to power the Philippine team to a joint fifth place in the team competition, behind the pace-setting France and defending champion United States.
The amazing French team and the reigning champs have identical two-under par 286s after 36 holes of play. Two shots off were Australia and England.
With Jerome Delariarte adding a 75, the RP squad had 146-145 for 291 in a tie with Finland, Argentina, Chinese-Taipei and New Zealand. Juvic Pagunsan had a 77 and didn’t count in the three-to-play two-to-count format.
The three Filipinos represented the country in the last Asian Games in Busan.
Que, a two-time national amateur champion, had an opening day 72 and with his 70 yesterday, he now trails individual leader Gregory Bourdy of France by three shots. He had 142 in a tie with Argentina’s Matias Anselmo (72-70) while Bourdy had 70-69-139.
American Hunter Mahan is running second with an even par 72 following a first day 68 for 140.
The power-hitting Que had a fiery run of three birdies in the first six holes and finished the front nine with a 33. He bogeyed the 10 and 11th holes but reclaimed the strokes with birdies on the 13th and 14th.
But the RP Open amateur champ failed to hold on to his three-under par card when he finished bogey-birdie-bogey for a 37 backside card.
