Tigers, Tamaraws remain unbeaten

Santo Tomas and Far Eastern made mincemeat of their opponents Sunday to keep their records unblemished in the 65th University Athletic Association of the Philippines volleyball competitions at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Human Kinetics gym in Diliman.

Santo Tomas nailed Ateneo deeper in the standings with a 44-minute, 25-11, 25-18, 25-18 triumph, the quickest in the tournament, to remain unbeaten in five games in the men’s contest.

The Far Eastern Lady Tamaraws were as ferocious as the Tigers in the women’s side, going 5-0 after a 52-minute conquest of National University (NU), 25-12, 25-13, 25-14.

Reigning men’s champion De La Salle tied title contender Far Eastern in second place following its 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 of the waning Maroons of tournament host UP.

De La Salle and FEU, which sent University of the East reeling to its fourth loss in five games, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21, tote 4-1 cards.

Adamson slowly moved away from the men’s cellar where the Blue Eagles are fenced with a 0-5 card. The Falcons improved to 2-3 by dealing the NU Bulldogs their fourth setback in five, 29-27, 21-25, 25-13, 26-24.

Santo Tomas and De La Salle are also keeping the Lady Tamaraws within striking distance in the women’s division, notching victories over teams which are at the bottom half of the standings also Sunday.

UST dumped UE, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18, while De La Salle crushed Ateneo, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16. They tote identical 4-1 records while UE dropped to 3-2 in a tie for fourth with UP and Ateneo absorbed its fourth setback against a solitary win to give Adamson company sixth spot.

UP went 90 minutes in disposing of Adamson, 25-17, 25-21, 26-28, 25-19.

Competitions resume tomorrow Matches in the men’s side pit Adamson against UE, De La Salle against Ateneo, UST against NU and FEU against UP and in the women’s side, it will be UP vs. NU, De La Salle vs. UE, UST vs. Adamson and FEU vs. Ateneo.
