Sales tops P2-million Glutaphos Chess GP

BACOLOD CITY – FIDE Master Jesse Noel Sales Friday emerged as the instant millionaire by winning the P2.2-M Glutaphos-Philippine Chess Grand Prix which ended at the Bilabo Room of Sugarland Hotel in Bacolod City.

Sales, of Calamba City, defeated National Master Alexander Lupian of St. Tomas, Davao, in 31 moves of Nimzovitcs defense in Game 4 of their championship series.

The event, sponsored by Pascual Laboratories, Inc., is a joint project by the City Government of Bacolod, Department of Interior and Local Government and the Philippine Chess Federation and was held in cooperation with Sugarland Hotel and Negros Navigation.

Lupian blundered in his 28th move which Sales took advantage of to post the win on the 31th move and claim the top purse of P1-M which Bacolod City Mayor Luzviminda Valdez awarded in simple ceremony at her office at the City Hall.

Sales won the series, 2.5-1.5.

On the other hand, PCF president Jesus Ingeniero presented to Mayor Valdez new Bacolod City NM Josevito Tapulgo.

The 36-year-old Tapulgo, of Barangay Bata, was one of the five Bacolod entries sponsored by the city government.
