De Ocampo rules FVR Cup

Former finance secretary Bobby de Ocampo came through with a net 70 while LaPanday Foods’ Luis Lorenzo shot a gross 71 to share top honors in the third FVR-RPDEV Cup golf tournament at the Aoki course of the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Cavite last Saturday.

A six-handicapper, De Ocampo gunned down two birdies and made 11 pars over the par 72 layout for a four-over par 76 as he copped the overall championship on a net 70 in the event held as part of the Ramos Peace and Development Foundation (RPDEV) fund-raising program.

The honoree, former President Fidel V. Ramos, and US Vice President Dan Quayle led the big field that competed in the 18-hole event.

James Ileto, 17-handicapper, shot a net 70 and nipped Boy Gonzaga in the countback for Class A crown while Daniel Lacson carded a 71 for third.

William Go, a 20-handicapper, Archit Bartolome (21) and Norberto Manzano (22) all had net 72s but Go took the Class B plum on a lower handicap. Rey Datu, with a 29 handicap, ruled Class C on a net 74.

Marjorie Lopingco, a smooth-swinging gem of a player from Alabang, fired two birdies and closed out with a net 71 to beat Arlette Dizon by one stroke for the ladies crown. She capped her explosive round by bagging the longest drive honors in her division.

Other winners of the special awards were Thomas Chen (nearest the pin), De Ocampo (most accurate drive) and Lorenzo (longest drive for men).
