The National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW) and organizers of the third European Conference on Women Sport Partnership expressed gratitude over the Philippine Sports Commission's (PSC) continuing support for women's active participation in sports development.
On both occasions, PSC commissioner Teresita Abundo, the only female among the five-member PSC board, championed government's concern over women in sports.
"The NCRFW sincerely appreciates the PSC for being a partner in the National Women's Day Celebrations. The PSC was instrumental to the success of the celebration of Women's Month," NCRFW chair Dr. Amelou Benitez Reyes said in a letter to PSC chairman Carlos Tuason.
"We commend the indefatigable commissioner [Teresita] Abundo and the entire PSC for their tremendous efforts [for the endeavor],"added the NCRFW through its executive director Emelita Valdeavilla.
In the international community, Abundo's report before the European conference held in Athens, Greece, from September 25 to 28, 1998, was prominently included in the event's journal released last year.
Abundo's report, Women, Sports and Development (Towards Empowerment and Equity in the Philippines), was applauded by 90 other delegates from European, American and African countries.
Abundo was conspicuously the only Asian delegate in the conference should not be stopping here not only in upholding women's rights in sports but also in al other aspects of society," said Abundo, herself a former national volleyball athlete.
