Manila Southwoods had Luisita in check and let Wack Wack steal the limelight yesterday as the Fil-Estate squad stormed ahead by 24 points after the second round of the Federation Interclub golf tournament at the Sherwood Hills Golf Club in Cavite.
Chucho Martinez's two-over-par 74 equivalent to 34 points was good enough to spark a well-balanced charge by the Southwoods squad as scores soared due to the swirling winds all day.
Ramontito Garcia had 30, Jeric Hechanova chalked up 27 and Hanson So Jr. made 27 for Southwoods' 117 effort for the day that put them at 259, far ahead of Luisita which was at 235 after a 110.
Luisita got 28s from Iggy Clavecilla and Louie Dakudao and similar 27s from Richie Garcia and Jojo Guingona.
Canlubang, competing without the frontliners of its successful recovery of the PAL Interclub title two weeks ago in Cagayan de Oro, was third at 215 after a 115.
DHL Open winner Gerard Cantada and Wack Wack took the day's scoring honors but still lagged behind by 53 big points with two days to go.
Cantada fired 35 points built around an eagle on the 15th hole, Kit Lopez had 32, national pool member Marlon Dizon got 29 and Bones Floro chipped in 26 for Wack Wack's day-best 122.
"It's a big lead but it's hard to become overconfident considering the conditions that can get worse anytime. For us, we have to worry about the course first before we can worry about our opponents," said Hechanova.
Forest Hills paced the Rizal Division while Mt. Malarayat was on top in the Bonifacio Division.
Forest Hills led Riviera by five points after scoring 105 for 213. Riviera had 104-208, 10 ahead Alabang which was at 198 and Manila Golf at 196.
Mt. Malarayat was ahead by eight over Pueblo del Oro with a 190 total for two days. Sherwood Hills was third at 169.
On Tuesday, Luisita copped the seniors title at the Wack Wack east course with an overwhelming victory.
