NUJP-S. Leyte chapter pushed

MAASIN CITY, Philippines  – The secretary-general of the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) visited this city on Sunday to discuss with local media practitioners the plan to create the organization’s Southern Leyte chapter.

Rowena Paraan said the expansion will widen the scoop of NUJP and in the process assist more practitioners in the area. “Whether or not they are NUJP members, we will help them in their search for justice,” she said.

Paraan has been going the rounds of Eastern Visayas for NUJP membership expansion. Before Maasin City, she was in Northern Samar province and Tacloban City and had plans to go to Ormoc City later on.

NUJP is in the process of strengthening the existing chapters through sponsorships of seminars, she said, adding that local chapters were asked to suggest on topics for discussion, directly affecting the welfare of media practitioners and those who are planning to join the profession.

Jani Arnaiz, NUJP-Southern Leyte’s point man, proposed the topics on “election coverage” and “basic journalism” for Southern Leyte. “These two topics are essential for accurate reporting and guide for upcoming practioners,” he told The Freeman. —(FREEMAN)
