MANILA, Philippines - Bagama’t hindi na maglalaro si Grand Master Wesley So, pipilitin ng Philippine Team na makapasok sa Top 20 sa darating na 41st World Chess Olympiad sa Agosto 1-14 sa Tromso, Norway.
“We’re still hoping that we’ll land in the Top 20,” sabi kahapon ni National Chess Federation of the Philippines executive director GM Jayson Gonzales sa PSA sports forum sa Shakey’s Malate.
Matatandaang lumipat ang 20-anyos na si So sa United States Chess Federation matapos magtampo sa NCFP, Philippine Sports Commission at Philippine Olympic Committee.
Ito ay dahil sa hindi kinilala ng NCFP, PSC at ng POC ang kanyang pagsikwat sa gold medal sa World University Games.
Kamakailan ay nakakuha ang NCFP ng liham mula sa FIDE, ang international chess body, ukol sa paglipat ni So sa USCF kung saan siya tumatayong assistant coach ng US Team.
Naglaro si So sa apat na World Olympiad mula 2006 at sa huling tatlong edisyon noong 2008, 2010 at 2012 ay hindi siya natalo sa Board One.
Sa pagbibida ni So, tumapos ang bansa sa No. 21 sa Chess Olympiad noong 2012 sa Istanbul, Turkey mula sa 6 wins, 2 draws at 3 loss. Ang papalit kay So sa Board One sa 2014 Olympiad ay si GM Julio Catalino Sadorra.
Ang US based na si GM Oliver Barbosa ang maglalaro sa Board Two, si GM John Paul Gomez sa Board Three at ang 63-anyos na si GM Eugene Torre, naghari sa 2014 Battle of the GMs, sa Board Four.
