MANILA, Philippines - Maraming hindi nakakaalam na ang Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, sa loob ng walong dekada, ay nagtataguyod sa sports development program at maging sa mga kampanya ng Filipino athletes sa iba’t ibang international sports arenas.
Itinatag noong 1934 sa ilalim ng Republic Act 4130, ang PCSO ang naging bukal ng pondo ng Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation, ang governing body para sa amateur sports.
Sa P2 million annual budget ng PAAF, ang 50 percent o P1 milyon ay galing sa sweepstakes draws kung saan ang 20 national sports associations ay nakakakuha ng taunang P30,000 para sa kanilang year-round development program pati na sa partisipasyon ng mga atleta sa international competitions.
Naimiyendahan ang naturang batas na nagtatag sa Philippine Sports Commission sa ilalim ng Rep. Act 6847.
Ang papel ng PCSO bilang main source ng pondo para sa sports requirements ay nailipat sa Philippine Gaming Corp.
Ang PCSO, ayon kay chairman Margie Juico, ay patuloy na sumusuporta sa Philippine sports.
“No, PCSO’s role in the government’s sports development program did not stop upon the creation of the PSC,” sabi ni Madam Juico sa SCOOP session sa Kamayan Restaurant along Padre Faura St. sa Malate.
“Republic Act 6847 which established the Philippine Sports Commission in January 24, 1990 provided that the Charity Fund of PCSO from the proceeds of six sweepstakes or lottery draws per annum shall go to the PSC,” dagdag pa ni Juico.
