MANILA, Philippines - Sa kabiguan ni dating unified world super bantamweight champion Nonito ‘The Filipino Flash’ Donaire, Jr., inaasahan ni Mexican world super bantamweight king Abner Mares na maitatakda na ang kanilang laban.
“I think right now Nonito is more interested in a fight with me than he was before, because now I’m the champion and he’s not,†sabi ni Mares kay Donaire. “He lost, and people know that I was asking for that fight.â€
Matatandaang hindi naplantsa ang banggaan nina Donaire (31-2-0, 20 KOs) at Mares (26-0-1, 14 KOs) na kasalukuyang World Boxing Council super bantamweight ruler dahil may alitan ang kani-kanilang promoters.
Si Donaire ay nasa Top Rank Promotions ni Bob Arum, samantalang nasa Golden Boy Promotions naman ni Oscar Dela Hoya si Mares.
Naagaw ni World Boxing Association titlist Guillermo Rigondeaux 12-0-0, 8 KOs) ng Cuba kay Donaire ang suot nitong World Boxing Organization via unanimous decision sa kanilang unification fight noong Abril.
Ito ang unang kabiguan ng 30-anyos na tubong Talibon, Bohol na si Donaire matapos ang 12 taon.
Sumailalim na si Donaire sa isang operas-yon sa napunit na litid sa kanyang kaliwang balikat matapos ang kanyang pagkatalo kay Rigondeaux.
Bago matalo kay Rigondeaux, apat na panalo ang itinala ni Donaire noong nakaraang taon kontra kina Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr. ng Puerto Rico, Jeffrey Mathebula ng South Africa, Toshiaki Nishioka ng Japan at Jorge Arce ng Mexico.
