Sports Academy sinimulan na

MANILA, Philippines - Isang timetable ang inilunsad para sa kauna-una-hang Philippine Academy for Sports sa loob ng dalawang taon kung saan pangungunahan ng Department of Education ang isang public-private sector partnership na sisimulan ng coaches training program at nakapaloob sa curriculum para magsilbing daan ng mga atleta para sa ‘K-to-12.’

Nagbigay si Sen. Pia Cayetano ng P3 milyon sa Department of Education noong Disyembre para sa transportasyon, akomodasyon at pagkain ng mga coaches at teachers mula sa tatlong pilot regional centers bilang unang hakbang sa pagtatatag ng academy. 

Ang mga ipinanukalang regional centers ay ang Rizal High School sa Pasig, General Santos High School at Abellana High School sa Cebu City.

Sa pagbuo sa academy, kabuuang 17 public high schools ang magiging SPS (Special Program in Sports) units at magsisilbing regional centers ng mga atleta sa athletics, swimming, archery, arnis, racket games, chess, gymnastics, taekwondo, team sports at sepak takraw. 

Ang tentative lineup ng mga SPS schools ay ang Ilocos Norte National High School (Region I), Cagayan National High School (Region II), Victoria National High School (Region III), Lopez National Comprehensive High School (Region IV-A), Palawan National High School (Region IV-B), Camarines Sur National High School (Region V), Iloilo National High School (Region VI), Negros Oriental National High School (Region VII), Palo National High School (Region VIII), Zamboanga Sibugay National High School (Region IX), Bukidnon National High School (Region X), Sto. Tomas National High School (Region XI), General Santos National High School (Region XII), Bayugan National Comprehensive High School (CARAGA), Datu Paglas National High School (ARMM), Tabuk National High School (CAR) and Muntinlupa High School (NCR).

Humigit-kumulang sa 300 coaches at teachers ang ikakalat sa 17 SPS schools para sa talent identification, sports psychology, strength at conditioning, physical fitness at skills development.

Noong nakaraang taon, magkakasama sina Department of Education consultants Fr. Tito Caluag, Sebastian Ripoll at si Chito Loyzaga, dating kumakatawan sa Philippine Sports Commission, sa isang one-week visit sa London bago ang Olympics para pag-aralan ang mga sports training programs ng 14 UK universities.
