The joy of playing golf

One of the most awaited events in the local corporate golf scene is the Mabuhay Miles Elite Invitational. Recently, 308 golfers registered in the annual golfing reunion of Philippine Airlines’ Business Class frequent flyers held at the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Cavite.

The recent golf invitational was celebrated for two reasons: the 10th anniversary of Mabuhay Miles, PAL’s frequent flyer program;  and the 20th year of the golf tournament itself (formerly the Mabuhay Club Invitational).

The ceremonial tee-off was led by executives Felix Cruz and Domingo Duerme of PAL, Alfred Chua of Allied Bank, Poch Villa-Real of MasterCard and J. Michael Carson of Boeing.

The winners were led by Louis Bartolome Borja, chief executive of the Philippine branch of International Marketing Group, who emerged low-gross champion for the second straight year and third time in four years. He also won in 2009 and finished as Class A runner-up in 2010.

Borja had eight birdies en route to a 65, the only sub-70 round of the day and the lowest-ever gross score in the history of the invitational. He could have bagged the overall net trophy if it were not for a tournament rule disallowing multiple titles for a single player. That opened the door for Shulman Airfreight International general manager Monchu Nolasco to claim the overall net title with a net 67 from a gross 77.

But it wasn’t all serious competition. The invitational was also about fellowship, camaraderie and good-natured fun, and it started on the golf course with a number of “fun” awards to Mabuhay Miles members who were there mainly for the joy of playing the game.

Prior to the game, PAL assistant vice president and head of the Mabuhay Miles team Ria Carrion-Domingo said, “Bring your best game because there are amazing prizes in store for the winners.  It’s going to be a fantastic golfing experience.” And there were indeed prizes galore for Mabuhay Miles Elite members, with everybody walking away with something from the raffle — golf accessories, travel amenities, auto accessories, premium PAL and San Miguel merchandise, gift certificates at top hotels and resorts, and of course, round-trip tickets to choice PAL destinations.

Lovi Poe and bossa nova singer Sitti provided entertainment for the guests while Anthony Suntay hosted the event.

The golf invitational was supported by major sponsors Airbus, Allied Banking Corp., Boeing, MasterCard International Philippines, Metrobank Card Corp., PeopleAsia and Petron.

Hole-in-One sponsor was Toyota Motor Philippines. Corporate sponsors included Chartis Philippines Insurance, Lufthansa Technik Philippines and Panasonic Avionics Systems. Official hotels were Century Park Hotel and Diamond Hotel Philippines.

Minor sponsors were BDO Unibank, GE Aviation, Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines, Union Bank and Victorinox Travel Gear / World Traveller.  Donors included Asia Brewery, San Miguel Beer, Clark Shoes UK, Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila, EDSA Shangri-La Hotel,  Hotel InterContinental Manila, Kameraworld, Mandarin Oriental Manila, Marco Polo Davao, Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort, Microtel Inns and Suites (Pilipinas), Mizuno, Pan Pacific Manila, Phiten, Recaro Aircraft Seating, Regency Lagoon Resort, Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort, Tanduay Distillers and Traders Hotel Manila.

Edgy & stylish

At a recent slumber party held at Discovery Suites’ newly-renovated Serendipity Suite, a group of young fashionable ladies had fun in their Skch + 3, Skechers’ stylish hidden-wedge, high-top sneaker collection.

The hidden-wedge fashion is one of the hottest trends around the globe.  It’s now the must-have shoe of celebrities who want to take fashion to the next level. With the introduction of Skechers Skch + 3 in the market, local fashionistas now have more reasons to celebrate in a range of glamorous, sexy shoes and boots with a three-inch hidden wedge.

What’s great about Skch + 3 is that it gives an edgier look to a range of get-ups from sporty styles to street-style fashion, as well as for those special night-out celebrations. The shoe line is not only trendy but is also comfy and adds that pop of color and style. It comes in smooth leather, woven canvas, suede with faux leather in a range of colors such as black, dark taupe, gray and fuchsia. This hip sneaker wedge also has stylish stitching accents.
