Purple Ribbon Launch

MANILA, Philippines - Advocates of the Reproductive Health bill have gone into the offensive this morning as they went house-to-house in a barangay in Quezon City to push for the immediate passage of the measure.

Members of the women's rights groups, led by the Democratic Socialist Women of the Philippines (DSWP), started the campaign with an open forum at Barangay Payatas where couples and their children were invited.

Elizabeth Angsioco, DSWP national chairperson and co-convenor of the Purple Ribbon Campaign for RH, said the event will help educate families on the controversial issue of family planning and contraception.

"We want them to be informed of the issues that will affect them," Angsioco said.

She said their group have long been involved in depressed communities and provide them women with livelihood programs.

Barangay Payatas is one of the most congested communities in the country.

After the open forum, members of the group went to houses in the area and tied a purple ribbon to symbolize the support of the couple to the RH bill. (Video by Cris Cayanan)
