DA doing its job to avert rice crisis

Summer is here, the heat of the sun intensifies and so are the issues that our nation confronts.

We are relieved that the noise on the NBN-ZTE deal is quite waning. Lozada’s popularity starts to fade. The Senators are taking a break from their grilling sessions.

Old issues fade, but new issues come. Noisemakers are at it again by making an issue out of our staple food which is rice. This is a concern which is not faced by our country alone, it is a worldwide problem.

Despite a so-called looming crisis on rice supply, the Department of Agriculture should be commended for their continuing efforts to meet the demand of the country for rice. I trust that they are doing their job to assure that we would have food on our tables.

But whether or not we are headed toward a crisis situation, we must bear in mind that the government’s efforts would not be enough. They need our help to solve this problem.

It would therefore be prudent if each one of us does not waste rice because there are many people, even in other poor countries, who would do anything just to put rice in their stomach.

Indeed, it’s summer. It’s a season to enjoy and take a break. Let us also take a break from the issues that weigh us down.

As we face the different problems that come our way, let’s us take hope in knowing that everything is temporary and this too will soon come to pass. — Kristina Villanueva, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija
