MANILA, Philippines - Xavier School is conferring the Xavier-Kuangchi Award for Exemplary Alumni to two Xaverians this year: Dr. John de Guzman, DBA (’67) and Dr. Harvey Uy, MD (’82).
Dr. John is recognized for his unwavering commitment to the Boy Scouts of the Philippines that began when he was a student, then a volunteer scout leader in Xavier School, and later on as a professional Scouter. Through his participation in various jamborees and conferences, the Philippines gained a strong voice in the international arena; and thus, he was able to assert the reforms needed to strengthen the movement. He is also cited for his extensive involvement in parish work as president of the St. Jude Parish Pastoral Council for 10 years.
Dr. Harvey is recognized for his contributions and service in the field of ophthalmology. He is a founding doctor of the Asian Eye Institute, and is the institute’s immunology and retina specialist and director for research. He has authored numerous international publications and presented many papers at international meetings. He has received numerous awards including the Balik Scientist Award from the Department of Science and Technology in 1998. He is a regular volunteer in medical missions and has provided thousands of free eye surgeries to indigent Filipinos.
The Xavier-Kuangchi Award was established to honor the alumnus who has made the most of his talents and resources and, through service and leadership, has had a positive impact in his community and to society in general. They will be formally awarded in conferment rites on March 11, 2011, 6:30 p.m. at the Angelo King Multipurpose Center, Xavier School.
