MANILA, Philippines - More than half a million elementary and high school students from different public and private schools nationwide participated in this year’s elimination rounds of the 2010 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge held during the second week of January. Elimination rounds were held simultaneously in all the 17 regions of the country. Those who passed the eliminations proceeded to the Division Finals last Feb. 11 and 12, participated by a total of 194 DepEd divisions.
Members of participating teams from all levels in the elementary and high school categories who met the hurdle rate were awarded with medals. Top placers in each division competed in the regional finals slated last Feb. 26.
“The steadily growing number of student participants nationwide is a testament that the Metrobank Math Challenge serves to fulfill its objective to awaken greater interest among children and youth toward the Math subject, “said Metrobank Foundation president Aniceto M. Sobrepeña.
Now on its 9th year, the Metrobank Math Challenge is an annual math competition that aims to awaken greater interest in math among elementary and high school students from across the country and to discover mathematical talents among the youth. It is being organized by the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), and the Department of Education (DepEd) and supported by the Metrobank Fun Saver’s Club. The annual Math Challenge produces national winners who get to compete and eventually win in international competitions. Among them is Carmela Lao, first placer in both Grade 6 Individual and Team Categories of the 2007 Metrobank Math Challenge, who reaped a bronze medal in the recent 50th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
